In particular, we need to assume the validity of the Carter-Israel conjecture, according to which the end state of the gravitational collapse of matter is a Kerr-Newman black hole. After a short review of current observations of black hole candidates, I discuss some motivations for which the Carter-Israel conjecture may be violated and how it can be tested in the future. ---------------------------------
