- AGU's Beowulf-Style Parallel Computer Systems

System A: ARK

Product run machine used for massive parallel computations for many body problems in statistical and condensed matter physics.

  • 69 Dual = 138 Pentium II (350MHz) processors.
    1 NFS/NIS/Gateway host, 4 Boot servers,
    64 Diskless clients.
  • 256Mbytes memory each = total 17 GBytes.
  • peak speed = 50GFlops.
  • cost per CPU less than 95,000-yen ( approx $850).
  • total consumption of electric power: 3KW.

System X: XIAN

Introduced for evaluation of PC's performance, Linux+MPI system stability and Switching hub speed. Now used as a test-bed for new releases of Linux/Compilers/Parallel libraries.

  • 4 Celeron 300A (450MHz) processors.
  • 128 Mbyte memory each.
  • 4GB disk each, bootable from both disk and net.

System B: BERN

Introduced for evaluation of Alpha-CPU's performance. Now used as a sub-system for massive computations.

  • 10 Alpha 21164 (600MHz) + 2 Alpha 21264 (533MHz) processors.
  • 512Mbyte x 10 + 1Gbyte x 2 memories
  • 40GB RAID 5 disk with tape backup.

System C: CLUMP

The purpose of this system is to make an EASY-TO-INSTALL and EASY-TO-MAINTAIN system. Alinka-LCM system enables us to make an automatic setup for everything. Asselbled on-the-shelf , it's easy to get in touch with each Motherboard/CPU/memories' conditions.

  • 11 Dual = 22 Cerelon 533MHz processors.
  • 128Mbyte memory.
  • alinka-LCM system for automatic net-boot setups.
  • wake up on LAN boot.
  • compact size to save space.

System D: (coming soon)

System E: EDEN

"E" stands for "economical". Assembled from bare-bone kits, the total cost is less than 400,000-yen (approx $3600) for 8 CPU + Hub.

  • 8 Cerelon 500MHz processors.
  • 128Mbyte memory.
  • On-board 100Base-T connection.
  • Bookshelf size to save space.

System F:

28 Notebook PC , originally purchased as equipments for the experimental course of undergraduate students, are used as parallel computing machines when off duty.

  • 28 Compaq Armada V300 with MobileCerelon 500MHz processors.
  • 128Mbyte memory.
  • On-board 100Base-T connection.
